5 Skills You need to Become a Great Architect

Are you itching to promote the well-being of a society and its people through the design of the buildings we live and work in? According to Medium.com, Architecture is the “profession of designing buildings, open areas, communities, and other artificial constructions and environments, usually with some regard to aesthetic effect. Architecture often includes design or selection of furnishings and decorations, supervision of construction work, and the examination, restoration, or remodelling of existing buildings.”

If this career path tickles your fancy, here are a few skills you would need to become a great architect:

1. Problem-Solving

Whether design-related or within the legal parameter space; you are ultimately tasked with solving problems for best use of the spaces in which society lives, moves, works and functions. With functionality, productivity and well-being in mind; you will have to review the space and brief you’ve been given along with the funding available and solve the problem in the most efficient and creative way possible before any bricks are laid.

2. Visualization

Once you’ve been handed the brief of what the client wants, you can begin imagining what form the project will take. Visualizing is an important skill that all art and design professionals should have. Before you’ve put your pen to paper or tapped your mousepad to begin drawing, you should already have an idea of what you’d like it to look like. There will always be edits and revisions made along the way, but initial visualization is key to creating strong designs.

3. Creativity and Design Skills

With a passion for conjuring up unique design ideas for future spaces and buildings, you will regularly need to refuel your creativity cup. Whether you’re looking at past building designs or imagining new ways of designing, creativity will be important when you are called upon to bring fresh ideas to the table and turn them into reality.

Your wealth of design skills will go hand in hand with creativity and you will need solid knowledge of architecture design software to be able to create drawings, models and buildings.

4. Numerical Skills

Architecture relies heavily on mathematical skills. In order to succeed and really add your artistic ideas and flair to your models and drawings, you will need to have strong knowledge of advanced algebra, numerical principles and geometry.

5. Legal Knowledge

Your great ideas created for projects will always need to align with building codes, regulations and policies else there can’t be a sign off. As an architect you will need to be aware of all the building codes and policies and come up with ideas within those parameters.
