Adding Subtitles and Captions in Your Videos

How to create subtitles for videos

Subtitles are essential for making your videos accessible to a wider audience. In Premiere Pro, you can create subtitles by typing out the dialogue or narration and adjusting the timing to sync with the audio of your video.

Here’s our step-by-step guide to show you how to add dynamic text effects in Premiere Pro.

  1. Transcribe Your Video: Start by transcribing the spoken content of your video. You can do this manually by listening to the audio and typing out the spoken words, or you can use automated transcription services or software.
  2. Create a New Caption File to add text for accessibility in your video clip.: In Premiere Pro, navigate to the “File” menu, click on “New,” and then choose “Captions.” This will create a new caption file in your project.
  3. Import Your Transcript: Open the caption file in Premiere Pro’s caption editor. Copy and paste your transcribed text into the caption editor. Each line of text should correspond to the spoken content in your video, ensuring clarity and accessibility when using Adobe Premiere Pro CC.
  • Adjust Timing: Once you’ve pasted your transcript, you’ll need to adjust the timing of each caption to match the spoken words in the video. You can do this by dragging the captions in the caption editor to the correct timing.
  • Format Your Captions: Customise the appearance of your captions by adjusting the font, size, colour, and position. You can do this in the caption editor by selecting the captions and adjusting the formatting options in the “Properties” panel.
  • Export Your Subtitles: Once you’re satisfied with your subtitles, you can export them along with your video. Go to the “File” menu, select “Export,” and then choose “Media.” In the export settings, make sure to select the option to include captions/subtitles, and choose the appropriate format for your needs (e.g., .srt, .stl, .scc).
  • Preview Your Video and check the placements and opacity of your text to ensure readability.: Before finalising your export, preview your video to make sure the subtitles appear correctly and are synchronised with the spoken words.
  • Export Your Video: Once you’re confident that everything looks good, export your video with the subtitles included.

Syncing subtitles with audio in Premiere Pro
